Helping People Help Themselves
The Upcreek disAbility page is dedicated to empowering people who find it physically, mentally or emotionally challenging to be running around tracking down information that is critical to their well-being and quality of life. It contains an extensive list of resources.  These lists are for us all. We can all contribute, correct, criticize, cooperating for the common good. Please send e-mail. See Post-Polio and Healthcare for other information of interest.

A natural phenomenon
Like lightning, which can strike at any time, disability is a natural phenomenon.

Serenity
"Serenity is not shelter from the storm,
but peace within the storm."

Helping People Help People
The Upcreek disAbility page is also for organizations, agencies and individuals who provide services for community clients and must sometimes take time away from people to find resources. We can share and become more powerful together.

See Non-Profit Help for other useful results of Upcreek CoOp efforts.

waver-left.gif (1165 bytes)The original disABILITY list of almost 200 references (names and phone numbers only) came from Mirisha who e-mailed it in February 1998 to a post-polio list-server to which we subscribe.   Upcreek CoOp converted the list to a table format, to make it easy to use with websites and mail-merge and began adding to it as time and energy allow.  Thank you, Mirisha.

Jun98 Disability.com Evan Kemp Associates site. Evan J. Kemp, Jr., was the former chairman of the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Earlier, While at SEC, Mr. Kemp was denied a promotion to a supervisory position because he used a wheelchair. He sued the SEC and 17 months later, he won. The successful though arduous experience made him aware of the shortcomings of the federal sector complaint processing system which, as chairman of the EEOC, he was able to improve greatly. In 1979, Mr. Kemp led a group of investors to purchase Invacare, Inc., a small firm that manufactures wheelchairs. He encouraged Invacare to include people with disabilities in designing and marketing its products. In 1980, Mr. Kemp left the government to head the Ralph Nader-sponsored Disability Rights Center, where he led a successful fight against the Reagan Administration's attempts to eliminate key provisions of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act. The Act made it illegal for organizations that receive federal funding to discriminate against people with disabilities.

Evan Kemp Associates Inc. (EKA) was founded in 1993 with five employees and a mission to provide products and services that enhance the quality of life for America's 49 million consumers with disabilities and chronic health conditions. Team EKA 's goals are to empower consumers and caregivers with information, products, resources and services that increase lifestyle options, independence and improve quality of life. Keywords: independence; quality of life
